Epitrochus
Fromentel, 1862, p. 199
Epitrochus Fromentel, 1862, p. 199 is a nomen dubium (unavailable).
Type Species
Epitrochus primus Fromentel, 1862, p. 199, pl. 7, fig. 2; Monotypy Fromentel, 1862, p. 199
Type Specimen: Holotype; ; Not Traced; Unknown
Type Locality: Cenomanian of France (Le Mans, Sarthe).
Remarks
The original documentation of the type specimen by de Fromentel (1862, p. 199) is insufficient in that the relationship to similar forms like Parasmilia or Ceratotrochus remains unknown. In addition, the images provided by de Fromentel (1862, pl. 7, figs. 2-2c) seem to show a very juvenile specimen (6 mm in height, 3 mm in diameter) with morphological structures that may not show its complete set of generic characteristics (e.g. corallum shape or wall structures). Because the type material is unavailable for study, the taxonomic position of Epitrochus de Fromentel remains unclear.
Distribution
- Central Europe; Late Cretaceous
