Classification
Diagnosis
Solitary coral of large diameter, with thin, abundant radial elements of four to five size orders, adaxial septal portions with large pores, inner margins lacerate, septal sides with small, pointed granules circular in section; columella spongy; endotheca abundant, built of low, extended dissepiments; wall thin, epithecal.
Comparisons
From Epistreptophyllum Milaschewitsch, genus Epistreptum differs in very thin, irregularly porous septa with granules circular in section, zigzag septa of the higher size order. In corallite architecture and in the septal structure, Epistreptum resemble much the pattern of Calamophylliopsis Alloiteau 1952.
Remarks
The genus, frequent in the Oxfordian and lower Kimmeridgian of Poland, is known in the Early Kimmeridgian of Rumania, and in the Tithonian-Valanginian of W Bulgaria: Epistreptum communaeforme Roniewicz, 2008, E. giganteum (Roniewicz, 1976) and E. cylindratum (Milaschewitsch,1876) in Roniewicz 1966. A coral named Epistreptophyllum densum Roniewicz, 1976 should be re-egxamined as having robust corallum, resembling coralla of Epistreptophyllum.
Distribution
- Central Europe; Late Jurassic
