increase

Summary

clonal addition of new corallites to a corallum, resulting in colonies. New corallites are called 'offsets' in rugosan and tabulate taxonomy and often referred to as 'daughters' though polyp gender is only verifiable for Scleractinians in vivo and is not routinely female. Ontogenetic development of new corallites (astogeny) is inferred from observations of different stages preserved within coralla. The counterpart changes in the polyps are observable only in extant Scleractinia. (Increase is often referred to as 'budding' and 'asexual reproduction' in scleractinian taxonomy.)
