Classification

Diagnosis

Colonial, subplocoid and plocoid, cerioid in places. Gemmation intracalicinal and septal. Septa developed regularly (in four sectors) or irregularly. Septa very poorly developed or even absent in some corallites. Regularly developed septa arranged as follows: in two bigger sectors 6 septa occur (1 S1 + 2 S2 + 3 S3). In two smaller sectors 4 septa are developed (1 S1 + 1 S2 + 2 S3). Wall developed in advance of septa or showing septoparathecal appearance. Endothecal dissepiments tabular and subtabular. Exotheca, if developed, vesicular.

Remarks

The genus Nowakocoenia KOLODZIEJ (in KOLODZIEJ and GEDL 2000) appears very similar to Cyathophora MICHELIN and Cryptocoenia D'ORBIGNY. According to KOLODZIEJ, the main difference between Nowakocoenia and other cyathophorid genera is the development of the corallite wall prior to the development of the septa. LOSER (2006) questioned this conclusion, arguing that this kind of successive development of corallite wall and septa could only be seen in serial sections. According to him "serial sections beginning from the top of the colony would be needed to support these arguments, but no such sections were provided by the authors of Nowakocoenia. Until such is proven to be the case in the type material of Nowakocoenia cieszynica, it is considered synonymous with Holocystis dupini, and therefore the genus is synonymous with Holocystis" (LOSER 2006, p. 290). However, LOSER did not provide the evidence, which, according to him, would be the only way to prove the author of Nowakocoenia wrong. Also, he did not provide the same kind of evidence (serial sections) for the species Holocystis dupini, which according to his own arguments (LOSER, 2006) would be the only way of telling whether or not it was the same taxon, or for that matter, whether it belonged to Holocystis or Nowakocoenia. Thus, the merging of Holocystis dupini and Nowakocoenia lacks supporting evidence and is, therefore, rejected (Pandey et al., 2007, p. 16).
