Type Species

Madrepora areolata Linneaus, 1758: 795; Subsequent Designation Milne Edwards and Haime, 1848:493

Type Specimen: Holotype; ; Lost; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: "O. Asiatico" (Linneaus, 1758)

A possible specimen of Linneaus is at the Linnean Society in London. However, it is uncertain if this specimen is truly the type. This possible type specimen is figured by Matthai (1928, pl.69, fig.4-6).

Diagnosis

Corallum uniserial meandroid; theca usually septothecal but sometimes parathecal; septa having tricorne teeth oriented perpendicular to the septal plane; septal faces with spiked granules organized in lines; paliform lobes well-developed; columella continuous, trabecular, teeth similar in size and shape to septal teeth; endotheca tabular; zooxanthellate.

Comparisons

Differs from Diploria in having well developed septal lobes.

Remarks

Fossil species monographed in Budd and Johnson (1998); approximately nine species, seven of which are known as fossils. For Recent species, see Matthai (1928).
