Type Locality: Madeira, Portugal (Recent)

Although indicated as the type species in Milne Edwards and Haime (1849), a full description of this species was not provided until Milne Edwards and Haime (1850). The type specimen could not be found at the MNHN in 2012; it may be at the NHM. A recent account of the taxonomic history of this genus is given in Locke, Weil, and Coates (2007, Proc. Biol. Society of Washington).
