Latomeandra

d'Orbigny ms in Milne Edwards and Haime 1849, p.271

Type Species

Lithodendron plicatum Goldfuss 1826, p. 45, pl. 13 fig. 5; Monotypy

Type Specimen: Lectotype; IPB 157; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Upper Jurassic (most probably Upper Kimmeridgian) near Giengen (Germany)

In fact the designation of the type species is not a clear monotypy as mentioned by Vaughan and Wells 1943 or by Alloiteau 1957 but L. plicata was the only species attributed without question marks to the genus by H. M. Edwards and J. Haime. These authors note that for d'Orbigny, L. plicatum (Goldfuss) was considered as the reference for the genus. The type specimen was initially a syntype (as nothing is said about the number of samples in Goldfuss). Considering that the type material was lost in Bonn, Alloiteau 1957 named a "néoholotype" which is not valid anymore. His designation of the Goldfuss' material by the term holotype (CINZ art.74.5) is considered as the designation of a lectotype. Beauvais 1964 p. 246 found again the material of the Bonn Museum and considered also this lectotype as a holotype. The lectotype is a silicified specimen, it is not sectioned and corresponds to the figure drawn in Goldfuss with a mirror effect.

Description

Phaceloid corallum . Intracalicular increase producing mono to polycentric branches. Irregular shape of corallite outlines. Rather regular growth rolls and thin costae visible from outside. Radial elements are pennular subcompact costosepta, anastomosed in the center or contratingent. Pennular edges turned toward the distal direction. Straight to flexuous septa according to the intracalicular increase. Some pores at the inner upper edge, moniliform distal edge, trabecules in one fan system. Parietal columella. Infundibuliform calicular platform. Synapticules present, endothecal dissepiments present. Wall, probably parathecal.

Remarks

The genus Latomeandra was widely used. For Jurassic, 94 nominal species were created and 40 others for Cretaceous (Löser 2000). A significant distribution need a revision of these species. Many Latomeandra were classified in other genera such as Microphyllia... Conversely, other species initially classified in genera such as Chorisastrea, Jugodendron, Gyrodendron…should be named Latomeandra
