Type Species

Coelosmilia fecunda Pourtalès, 1871, p. 21, pl. 1, fig. 12, pl. 6, figs. 14-15; Monotypy

Type Specimen: Syntype; MCZ 2752; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Recent: Strait of Florida, 124-576 m

Type species well described by Cairns (1979). Six syntypes.

Classification

Diagnosis

Corallum colonial and recumbent, new corallites budding extracalicularly from edge zone and quickly becoming detached from parent corallum resulting in corallites with an open or broken base; endothecal dissepiments widely spaced; paliform lobes present on higher cycle septa; columella trabecular.

Comparisons

Similar to Asterosmilia but budding daughter corallites from edge zone.

Remarks
