Type Locality: Oedalm ( = Kesselwand-Rohrmoos), Gosaukamm region, Northern Calcareous Alps. Rhaetian, Late Triassic
The species is well represented in the collections of the GBA and NHMW.
Classification
Diagnosis
Solitary. Calice distally tube-like. Septal blades compact, fading in the calice; septal spines lacking. Columella solid, fibrous. Wall built of fibres organized into scaly units (squamae). Wall in continuation with septal tissue. Endotheca lacking.
Description
Morphology and microstructure of Gigantostylis epigonus was described and illustrated in Cuif 1965:1046, text-fig.1-3; Cuif 1977: 27, text-fig.5, and Roniewicz 1989:138, pl.36,fig.1; pl.45,fig.1,2; pl.43,fig.1.
Comparisons
For its microstructure and skeleton architecture, Gigantostylis is incomparable to other corals.
Remarks
The genus is monotypical.
Distribution
- Southern Europe; Late Triassic
