Etallonasteria

Roniewicz, 1987:152

The taxon replace Etallonia Roniewicz 1966: 246, a junior homonym of Etallonia Oppel, 1861 ( Crustacea)

Etallonasteria Roniewicz, 1987:152 is a replacement taxon for Etallonia Roniewicz, 1966: 246.

Type Species

Cyathophora minima Etallon, 1864: 373, pl. 52, fig. 9; Monotypy Roniewicz 1966: 246

Type Specimen: Holotype; MJSN ; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Porrentruy, Switzerland. Late Oxfordian (Sequanian).

The specimen from the coll. Thurmann housed at the Ecole cantonale in Porrentruy, Switzerland, was described and figured by Koby 1881:107, pl. 25: 5 under the name of Convexastrea minima (Etallon), and also illustrated by Beauvais 1964: pl. 4, fig. 2, pl. 5, fig. 1 as Adelocoenia minima (Koby). Its assignement to Adelocoenia d'Orbigny by Beauvais 1964 was inapplicable to the set of presented generic features.

Diagnosis

Colony plocoid-subcerioid; costosepta compact, costae subconfluent and non-confluent, inner septal margin regularly denticulated, septal faces covered with minute granulation; wall synapticular, regularly perforated; endotheca tabular; peritheca rudimentary, composed of synapticular floors and peripheral part of costae; columella lacking.

Description

Type species was described and illustrated by Koby 1881:107, and illustrated by Beauvais 1964. The species, well represented in the Oxfordian - Early Kimmeridgian in Poland and Rumania was described, discussed and illustrated by Roniewicz 1966:247, text-fig. 19, pl. 24, fig. 1a-d, 2; and 1976:109, pl. 34, fig. 1ab.

Comparisons

The genus is similar in external colony feature to Cyathophora Michelin, Solenocoenia Roniewicz and Gill, and Pseudocoenia d'Orbigny, from which it differs in the structure of corallite and colony: synapticular, regularly perforated wall, peritheca with synapticular floors and endotheca made of thin, horizontal tabulae; as well as in different septal micromorphology consisting of small, sharp granulae.

Remarks

Only the type species is known. The species is fairly well distributed in Late Jurassic calcareous platforms, and also known in the Early Cretaceous of Europe.

Distribution

  • Western Europe; Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous
  • Central Europe; Late Jurassic
