Epiphyllum

Alloiteau, 1957, p. 107

Alloiteau placed this genus in the Procyclolitidae. It seems that the morphology of pennulae is closer of Latomeandridae.

Type Species

Montlivaltia arenula Fromentel and Ferry 1866, p. 134, pl. 23, fig. 4; Original Designation

Type Specimen: Lectotype; MNHN M03628; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Pliensbachian of May sur Orne (Calvados; France)

the lectotype is transversally sectionned. The type was refigured in Alloiteau 1957 pl. 5 fig. 13. Abusive designation of a holotype in Alloiteau 1957.

Description

Trochoid attached solitary corallum covered by a folded epitheca s.l. Calice flat and subcircular. Radial elements are compact straight pennular septa. Their thickness is fairly constant if pennular ornamentation is neglected. Menianae discontinuous. Trabeculae angulose in section. Moniliform distal edge. Trabecules vertical or subvertical in direction including near the wall. Symmetry difficult to decipher in terms of size orders. Synapticules present. Dissepiments present.

Remarks

Alloiteau wrote that septa are perforated (at least at the distal edge). The transverse section does not show any pore (except a bioerosion trace). He noticed the absence of a columella. In fact it is difficult to provide a reliable statement on this aspect. It seems that the septa join each other at the center but don't make a relief.

Distribution

  • Western Europe; Early Jurassic
