Remarks

The original documentation of the genus Brevismilia by Boelsche (1867, p. 33) is insufficient in that it remains unclear how this taxon differs from genera like e.g. Smilotrochus or Desmophyllum. In addition, based on the very small size of the corallum (about 1 mm in height and a little over 2 mm in diameter), it cannot be ruled out that the type specimen represents a fragment of a branching-colonial form like Cladocora, Liptodendron, or Calamophylliopsis, especially since the author of Brevismilia himself included the branching (phaceloid-dendroid) form Cladophyllia nana Milne Edwards and Haime in the synonymy of his newly created genus.
