Type Species

Fungia symmetrica Pourtalès, 1871, p. 46, pl. 7, figs. 5-6; Monotypy

Type Specimen: Syntype; MCZ 2767; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Recent; Strait of Florida, 640-823 m

Considered as a subgenus by Cairns (1989). Two syntypes, but one lost.

Remarks

Contains the record of the deepest living scleractinian coral species at 6328 m (Keller, 1974). Seventeen species, including 3 fossil species (Cairns, 1989, 1999).
