Type Species

Type Specimen: Neotype; USNM 94469; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Late Pliocene: England

Neotype established by Cairns (2001). Type species best described and illustrated by Milne Edwards and Haime, 1850, p. 9-10, pl. 1, figs. 3a-d.

Diagnosis

Corallum solitary and attached, having a polycyclic base; theca costate, epitheca absent or present; Pourtales Plan present; columella spongy and elongate. Azooxanthellate.

Remarks

This genus and family were monographed by Cairns (2001), which included a phylogenetic analysis based on morphology. 129 species, 76 of which are fossil (Cairns, 2001).
