Thomas, 1935, p. 425

Type Species

Tricycloseris limax Tomes 1883a p. 191 pl. 7 fig. 18-19; Original Designation

Type Specimen: Lectotype; NHMUK R 9103; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Great Oolite (Bathonian, Middle Jurassic) of Fairford (Gloucestershire, Great Britain)

The type material was figured in and redescribed in Thomas 1935, p. 426, pl. 18, fig. 2. A paralectotype exists (R3914)

Classification

Description

Small massive thamnasterioid corallum with a central mother corallite. Concave lower face covered with an epitheca s.l. (probably a pennular envelope), Intracalicinal increase. Radial elements are perforate anastomosed biseptal sheets. They are straight, curved or sinuous, unusually unequal for pennular corals, with a moniliform distal edge. Inner edge attenuated, lateral faces covered with discontinuous menianae. Pennulae with pennular edges turned toward the distal direction. The distal direction is downward at the periphery of the corallum. No pali. Microstructure unknown. Hexameral symmetry cannot be deciphered, bilateral symmetry marked by torsion of septa and anastomosings in daughter corallites. Endotheca present , columella absent, synapticulae present, no wall between corallites.

Comparisons

Close of Genabacia but the basal concavity and the elongation of the colony and relationships between daughter corallites are different. Differs from Dimorpharaea or Microsolena mainly by the downward growth that suggests an automobile faculty as in Genabacia or Chomatoseris.

Remarks

The lectotype does not allow to demonstrate the regularity of perforations in radial elements. Three nominal species

Distribution

  • Western Europe, Southern Europe; Middle Jurassic - Late Jurassic
