Rhopalodendron

Turnsek, 1989:87

Type Species

Rhopalodendron juliense Turnsek,1989: 87, pl.8: 1-5; Monotypy Turnsek,1989: 87

Type Specimen: Holotype; SAZU P-845; Not Traced; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Pokljuka - 14744, Slovenia. Tuvalian , Late Carnian, Late Triassic

Classification

Diagnosis

Diagnosis re-edited herein: Phaceloid, corallites cylindrical with small axial space; increase by symmetric or asymmetric division of the adult corallite; septa in 3-4 (5) size orders, arranged in “descending series”, septa of first two size orders approach to the center, other septa are shorter successively, contours of the septa show enlargements which correspond to lateral septal micromorphology in the form of fairly large granules typical of the family; rare trabecular extensions of the inner septal margin enter to the septal space; endotheca vesiculous; epithecal wall thin, pellicular.

Description

Brief original description of the species are complemented by associating illustrations. Mode of increase by symmetrical division is illustrated in Ramovs and Turnsek 1991. pl. 8, fig.1, asymmetrical increase is to be observed in Turnsek and Senowbari-Daryan 1994, pl. 6, fig.5, and Senowbari-Daryan et al. 1999, pl. 3, fig.2.

Comparisons

Rhopalodendron differs from another phaceloid genus of the family Conophylliidae having septa arranged in “descending series”, Araiophyllum Cuif, with its compact septa.

Remarks

Only one species has been described, so far. The species was briefly described in a series of papers on paleontological inventory of late Carnian limestones from Slovenia (Tunsek 1989, 1997), Hydra Island (Turnsek and Senowbari-Daryan, 1994) and Oman (Bernecker 1996, Senowbari-Daryan et al. 1999), early Norian from Slovenia (Ramovs and Turnsek 1991) and from the Dachsteinplateau, Alps (Roniewicz 2010).

Distribution

  • Southern Europe; Late Triassic
Carnian and Early Norian in the Alpine belt of Europe and in Oman.
