Classification
Diagnosis
Colonial, massive, thamnasterioid. Gemmation extracalicinal. Septa compact with occasionally perforated axial ends, laterally granulate and carinate. Columella well-developed, spongy papillose. Synapticulae present. Endothecal dissepiments thin, subtabulate.
Remarks
Fungiid forms are generally characterized by fairly porous and coarsely granulated septa. Despite its commonly fungiid appearance, the genus Astraeofungia Alloiteau is characterized by compact septa (with occasionally perforated axial ends) and rather delicate septal ornamentations (Baron-Szabo, 2002). Specimens having perforated septa and rather coarse septal ornamentations have been erroneously placed in the genus (see Schöllhorn, 1998, p. 94).
