Classification

Description

Phaceloid corallum. Calices subcircular to subpolygonal in outline. Epitheca s.l. present, costae absent. Mode of increase unknown. Radial elements probably subcompact, anastomosed, with rather parallel lateral faces (but small septa attenuated), rather straight unequal in length and thickness. Distal edge not observed, inner edge with detached trabecules, lateral faces probably pennular. Hexameral symmetry probable with anastomoses according to cycles (but only one calice deciphered), bilateral symmetry not observed. Endotheca not observed. Center of the corallite filled with detached trabeculae of S1-S2 septa, synapticule present, wall present at the periphery of the calyx, of an unknown nature.

Comparisons

Phacelophyllia differs from Thecactinastraea by its anastomosing septa.

Remarks

L. Beauvais (1986) described the mode of budding as intracalicular marginal. I cannot confirm or invalidate this observation. Three nominal species known in Jurassic

Distribution

  • Southern Europe; Early Jurassic
  • North Africa; Early Jurassic
