Remarks
Recent investigations by Loser (2006) revealed that the holotype of the type species of Paronastraea was characterized by septal arrangements in various systems, one distinct or indistinct major septum, and apophysal extentions standing off septal flanks. In the generic diagnosis, he also included characteristics of non-type material which cannot be seen in the holotype of the type species (e.g. cerioid polyp integration) and are, therefore, excluded from the generic diagnosis. Because the characteristics seen in Paronastraea are also present in some corallites of the type material of Heterocoenia, their synonymy is suggested. However, because in Paronastraea, the apophysal features are much more distinctly developed and the corallite walls have a greater tendency to disintegrate, Paronastraea is considered a subgenus of Heterocoenia.
