Pamirophyllum

Melnikova and Roniewicz, 1990: 86

In Roniewicz 1974 and Melnikowa 1975 described as Stylophyllum Reuss, 1854

Type Species

Stylophyllum iranicum Melnikova, 1972:59; Original Designation

Type Specimen: Holotype; PIN 4599/1; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Shurabe-Nagi, Nayband, Central Iran. Late Norian, Late Triassic

Classification

Diagnosis

Cerioid, composed of corallites of large diameters ranging up to 20 - 25 mm. Wall simple, formed by external septal edges and auxiliary, verical septal spines. Septa reaching the axial pit, lamellate, with some free spines detached at the internal edges. Columella papillar, poor. Dissepiments vesicular and tabuloid. Increase by intracorallite peripheral detachment of new corallites, or by subequal division without dividing septa.

Description

The type species from Iran and other species from the Pamirs and Tatra Mts are described in Melnikova and Roniewicz 1990.

Comparisons

This stylophylliid genus, having septa built of septal spines, in general view resembles corals of the faviinan coral groups having thick-trabecular septa. From another stylophyllinan cerioid corals belonging to genus Meandrostylis, the genus considered has much more developed septal apparatus and endotheca, and septal spines located on dissepiments contributing to wall formation.

Remarks

Three species are known. Two species from the Central Asia are from the Norian-Rhaetian (Melnikova and Roniewicz 1990), while the species from the Tatra Mts is from the Early Jurassic beds (Roniewicz and Michalik 1998).

Distribution

  • Central Asia; Late Triassic
Central Iran, SE Pamirs, Late Norian/Rhaetian; Tatra Mts, Early Jurassic.
