Diagnosis
Colonial, massive, meandroid. Gemmation intracalicinal, resulting in sinuous calicinal series, separated by perithecal walls and ambulacrae. Calicinal centres indistinct. Costosepta compact, finely granulated laterally. Anastomosis present. Columella lamellar, generally continuous. Wall septothecal. Perithecal and endothecal dissepiments thin, subtabulate.
Comparisons
As previously pointed out (Baron-Szabo, 2002, p. 70), macroscopically, the genus Pachygyra Milne Edwards and Haime shows great affinities to the genus Orbignygyra Alloiteau, but the two genera differ in septal microstructure and thecal development (rhipidogyrid microstructure, parathecal and septothecal wall, and tectiform collines in Orbignygyra; generally composed of small simple trabeculae, septothecal wall, and no collines in Pachygyra). Some specimens previously assigned to Orbignygyra seem to rather show those structures characteristic of Pachygyra (e.g. from the Santonian of Austria in M. Beauvais, 1982, and from the Santonian-Campanian of Slovenia in Turnšek, 1994).
