Classification

Remarks

Originally, the genus Pachycyathus Alloiteau was placed in the Thecocyathiidae Vaughan and Wells. However, re-study of the holotype of the type species of Pachycyathus Alloiteau by Baron-Szabo in 2005 (unpublished data) revealed that its skeletal structures closely corresponded to the kinds seen in the dendrophylliid genus Palaeopsammia Wanner: synapticulothecal wall; a well-developed spongy-papillose columella; pali that irregularly occur before various septal cycles and are variable in shape; a septal arrangement closely corresponding to the kind seen in Palaeopsammia Wanner. Therefore, their synonymy is suggested.

Distribution

  • Southern Europe; Late Cretaceous
